The traditional olive harvest
A duty for all generations
The olive trees are harvested once a year between the months olive November and March, depending on the geographical region, the height meter and the type of the olive trees. Our olivetrees are harvested at the beginning of February. The harvest of the olive trees is traditionally done by the whole family. There are tasks for everybody. The head of the family is responsible for the most difficult tast. He has to prune the tree. A very responsible task because the crop of the following years is influeced by the right pruning. The branches which are cut have to be seperated from the olives. A task usually done by others involved in the harvest. A task where even little and old people can be helpful. At the end, when all olives are brounght down from the tree, the big tarpaulin, which was spread out under the olive tree to catch all the falling olives, is fold up and the olives are collected on one spot to put them in jute bags. At the end of the day all jute bags are brought to the next oil factory. It is important for the quality of the olive oil that the time between the harvesting of the olives and the pressing is as short as possible.
